Nestled in the foothills of the Nilgiris mountain range, Anaikatti is a picturesque locale with verdant hills, gushing streams, and thick forests teeming with wildlife, including wild elephants—hence the name Anaikatti, meaning "group of elephants." Just 25 km from Coimbatore city, it offers a unique climate and is an ideal destination to experience the natural beauty of the Western Ghats year-round.
Climate Overview:
- November to Mid-February: Long winter, 18°C to 24°C
- Mid-February to Mid-March: Spring, 25°C to 30°C
- Mid-March to May: Peak summer, 27°C to 31°C
- June to October: Monsoon and autumn, 19°C to 28°C
At SDJ Ayurvedalaya, each season brings its unique character, energy, and grace. We strive to exist in harmony with nature, enjoying cool and pleasant evenings even on the warmest days. The monsoons are especially lush and beautiful, traditionally considered the best time for a retreat. However, any time is ideal for treatments, as the opportunity to enhance one’s well-being is always valuable.
Cuisine
At SDJ Ayurvedalaya, our cuisine reflects our philosophy, viewing food as a divine offering. Nature and ecology influence our menu through seasonal changes and our supply chain.
We offer exquisite vegetarian cuisine using fresh, organic produce primarily from our garden, bringing a unique and indigenous flavor to our dishes.
Our cuisine is primarily traditional South Indian, prepared without red or green chilies, tamarind, maida, toor dal, chickpeas, or any legumes other than moong dal. Despite these restrictions, our food remains unbelievably tasty as shared by many people. Each dish is meticulously researched and created to adhere to Ayurvedic principles and dietary restrictions, as food plays a crucial role in Ayurveda healing.
While our menu may not be extensive, patients enjoy the simple yet unique dishes designed to complement their Ayurveda treatments. Below is a list of commonly served items in our 14-day menu, featuring vegetables like drumsticks, okra, elephant yam, carrots, beets, green beans, tender radish, plantain pith, banana blossom, chow chow, bottle gourd, Snakegourd, bittergourd, ridge gourd, Ivy Gourd, Ash Gourd, Madras Cucumber and various leafy greens.

Ayurveda does not permit raw food, so salads are not part of the daily regimen, but certain fruits are served once in a while . Ghee and coconut oil are primarily used for cooking, with occasional use of sesame oil.
We include onions and garlic in our cooking due to their Ayurvedic medicinal value but in limited amounts. Only Saindhava salt (pink rock salt) is used, and most dishes are prepared with less salt.
Herbal Drinks like lemongrass, tulasi, ginger tea, etc are served but we do not serve coffee or Chai. Milk is not served, however, we use buttermilk and ghee liberally, making our meals non-vegan. We recommend staying with the food served here and avoiding outside food or snacks, though selective fruits can be consumed as a backup.
Life at SDJ
SDJ Ayurvedalaya is a serene 16-acre campus nestled between lush forests and the Western Ghats. This tranquil retreat, away from city life, offers a warm and healing environment where nature thrives. The campus hosts a variety of wildlife, including trees, plants, birds, deer, cows, butterflies, insects, and even elephants that occasionally visit.
The natural ambiance, in harmony with seasonal rhythms, enhances the Ayurvedic experience, helping guests slow down, live in the moment, and fully benefit from treatments. SDJ Ayurvedalaya remains deeply connected to nature, ensuring optimal physical, mental, and spiritual healing.
Daily life here, beyond treatments and consultations, focuses on introspection and rest. One is encouraged to embrace solitude, reflection, and meditation, enriching their healing journey.
The SDJ calendar celebrates seasons, auspicious days, and festivals with prayers, gatherings, music, bhajans, traditional cuisine, and creative expressions.
Days begin with birdsong before sunrise, followed by a 6.30 AM medication, and end at 9:30 PM after the last prescribed medication. There would be external treatments, internal medications, consultations, meals, and optional activities like guided meditation, Yoga Nidra, bhajans, and prayers, all in a relaxed and spaced-out manner.
Wellbeing Practices
1. "Brahma Muhurtha," roughly between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM, is emphasized; kindly retire early to rise at this time.
2. At approximately 5:45 AM, after mouth cleansing, sip 100 to 200 ml of room temperature water gradually.
3. Consider using "Dasanakanti churnam," a herbal tooth powder, instead of toothpaste; it's available in our pharmacy.
4. Approach medication with a prayerful mindset, optionally preceded by a prayer to Lord Dhanwantari. Brushing teeth before medication is at your discretion.
5. Dinner is served around 7:45 PM, and retiring by 9 PM supports rising at "Brahma muhurta."
6. Enjoy ample free time here; our focus isn't on back-to-back treatments or activities. We encourage introspection and relaxation.
7. Attend to natural urges promptly but without force. Inconsistent evacuation times are normal during treatments.
8. Eat only when hungry; if not, take a few spoonfuls. Avoid overeating and don't rush meals.
9. Avoid overeating, eating before digestion, and fast swallowing; stop eating when satisfied, not full.
10. After meals, take a brief walk of 50 to 60 steps ( not more) and then rest for about 20 minutes in a sitting or reclined position.
11. We deliver food to your room to foster a meditative eating experience; avoid talking or socializing during meals.
12. Drink water as needed; avoid excessive consumption.
13. Hot water is recommended during your stay, but you may adjust it to room temperature.
14. Sip water with meals, around 100-200 ml, and avoid drinking immediately afterward for about 50 minutes.
15. Avoid daytime naps, especially after meals, as it contradicts treatment goals; brief rest post-lunch is acceptable.
16. If feeling tired during the day, a 1-hour nap is permissible before or after lunch, preferably around 11 AM or 4 PM.
